Russian Government Confiscates $10 Million Worth of Bitcoin in Bribery Case
In a significant development in the world of cryptocurrency, the Russian government has confiscated $10 million worth of Bitcoin from a former law enforcement official. According to local reports, this massive seizure is part of an ongoing bribery case involving cryptocurrency.
The Seizure: 103 BTC Confiscated from Marat Tambiev’s Ledger Nano X
Russian court enforcement officers have begun proceedings to seize 1 billion Russian rubles ($10 million) — or roughly 103 Bitcoin (BTC) — from former Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) employee Marat Tambiev. This seizure is a significant development in the ongoing bribery case, which has been described as the largest in Russia’s history.
The Bribery Case: Infraud Organization Behind the Bribes
Tambiev was convicted of crypto bribery in 2023 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for accepting a bribe of 2,718 BTC, worth about $258 million. The case has been described as the largest bribery case in Russia’s history. According to local sources, the 103 BTC seized from Tambiev’s case represents only 4% of the total bribery amount.
The Hacker Group Behind the Bribes
Investigations have revealed that the hacker group behind the bribes is none other than Infraud Organization. The group members, Kazakhstan citizens Mark and Konstantin Bergman, and Estonian citizen Kirill Samokutyaev, reportedly bribed Tambiev in various procedural decisions, including their own criminal case.
Multiple Former ICRF Employees Involved
The investigation has also found that multiple former ICRF employees were involved in extorting bribes from Infraud Organization hackers. The bribes were reportedly offered in exchange for stopping the hackers’ prosecution and an opportunity to hide crypto assets worth at least 14 billion rubles ($138 million), according to TASS.
Tambiev’s Arrest and Seizure of Private Keys
Former ICRF employee Marat Tambiev was arrested in March 2022, and enforcement officers located his Bitcoin wallet private keys on his laptop in a folder labeled ‘Retirement.’ The officers and the court concluded that Tambiev had received thousands of BTC from Infraud Organization.
Impact on Russia’s State Revenue
The confiscated Bitcoin will be added to Russia’s state revenue as part of the legal proceedings. This development highlights the increasing importance of cryptocurrency in the country’s economy and the need for strict regulations to prevent such cases in the future.
